KALEIDOSCOPE READING ROOM
Making a Difference
Y.O.U.T.H., Inc.’s Kaleidoscope Reading Room is a welcoming, community-based literacy space designed to increase access to diverse, age-appropriate books and learning experiences for youth ages 4–17 and their families in northeastern Jefferson County, Arkansas. Like a kaleidoscope, the Reading Room reflects many stories, perspectives, and cultures—helping children see themselves in books while also learning about the wider world.

This project will provide a safe, supportive environment where children can build reading skills, strengthen academic performance, and develop a lifelong love of learning through free access to books, guided reading support, tutoring connections, story time, family reading events, and enrichment activities. Families will benefit from a positive space to read together, participate in literacy-based programming, and access resources that encourage learning at home.

The Kaleidoscope Reading Room will also help address gaps caused by limited local resources and growing barriers to book access, ensuring youth can explore literature freely and without censorship. By creating a consistent, engaging literacy hub, the project will strengthen educational outcomes, support family involvement, and contribute to a healthier, more connected community where children are encouraged to grow in confidence, creativity, and opportunity.
HIKMAH HOUSE
Where WISDOM meets COMMUNITY
Hikmah House (meaning “Wisdom House”) is a welcoming coffeehouse-style gathering space being developed by Y.O.U.T.H., Inc. in Wabbaseka, Arkansas to reduce isolation, strengthen community connection, and improve quality of life for residents age 50 and older. Many older adults in our rural community live alone, have limited transportation, and lack safe, affordable places to socialize. Hikmah House will provide a consistent, friendly environment where seniors can gather during daytime hours for free coffee, light refreshments, conversation, games (such as bingo and dominoes), newspapers, and community information.

The project will transform an existing local space into a senior-centered hub that promotes mental wellness, belonging, and dignity. In addition to informal social time, Hikmah House will host low-cost or free activities such as guest speakers, health and wellness check-ins, intergenerational story-sharing, and volunteer opportunities that allow older adults to contribute their knowledge and life experience.

Hikmah House will benefit the entire community by strengthening relationships across generations, increasing civic engagement, and creating a safer, more connected town. By offering a regular place to gather, the project will help reduce loneliness, support emotional well-being, and ensure older residents remain visible, valued, and supported in community life.
